The International Association for Teaching Pragmatics (ITAP) is pleased to announce the ITAP Spring Seminar 2023 which will be blended (online and at Complutense University of Madrid) on June 16th, 2023.

The main theme of the seminar will be Teaching the Pragmatics of Emotions. The following scholars have accepted to be the keynote speakers:

Dr Jean-Mark Dewaele (Birkbeck University of London)

Dr Laura Alba-Juez (National Distance Education University of Madrid)

Seminar Presentation Types

Presentations must be in English and should address any of the subjects in the list of topics below.

A) Individual oral presentations

These must be 20-minute oral presentations, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion.

B) Workshops

These must be 20-minute hands-on sessions, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion.

C) Ph.D. students’ oral presentations

These must be 20-minute oral presentations, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion. This time slot will be devoted to Ph.D. students that are currently carrying out their dissertations on pragmatics and technology. In this session students will be able to share their current work and also get feedback from well-known scholars in the ﬁeld.

Seminar Topics :

The presentations and workshops may include the following topics, but other topics related to the seminar’s theme will be welcome:

- How to increase students' motivation: exploiting materials pragmatically.

- Eﬀects of emotional aspects on learning pragmatic competence.

- Eﬀects of L2 pragmatic instruction on students’ emotions,

- Lowering the anxiety ﬁlter of students through pragmatics (e.g. using humour in the classroom).

- Teaching and learning pragmatic competence: attitudes of students and teachers

All proposals should be submitted via email:itap.association@gmail.com

Please make sure that your submission includes the following information:

- Abstract no longer than 300 words. Please name this ﬁle “Abstract_Surname” (format Word/pdf ﬁle, Times New Roman 12).

- Data ﬁle containing the Author/s’ name(s) and aﬃliation(s), the title of the paper, the type of submission (individual oral presentation, workshop or PhD presentation), the e-mail address(es), and equipment required if the presentation is intended to be at the Complutense University of Madrid premises. Please name this ﬁle “Data_Surname” (format Word/pdf ﬁle).

- Notiﬁcation of acceptance: May 1st, 2023

- Registration: From May 1 st to June 1st , 2023
