About the Speaker

Zoltan Dienes completed his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford and then took his faculty position at the University of Sussex, where he is now a Professor of Psychology. His research addresses basic questions about consciousness in human mind. He is also a big fan of advocating operating open and transparent science, including ways of changing common practice in statistical inference by using Bayesian methods. He has more than 180 publications and many appear in top notch journals in his field, like Cognition, JEP, Nature and Science.

Zoltan Dienes  在牛津大学完成了实验心理学的博士学位，然后在苏塞克斯大学（University of Sussex）担任教职，现在他是一名心理学教授。他的研究涉及人类意识的基本问题，他有180多篇出版物，许多发表在他所在领域的顶尖期刊上，如 Cognition, JEP, Nature and Science 。

To get evidence for or against one's theory relative to the null hypothesis, one needs to know what it predicts. The amount of evidence can then be quantified by a Bayes factor.   It is only when one has reasons for specifying a scale of effect that the level of evidence can be specified for no effect (that is, non-significance is not a reason for saying there is no effect). In almost all papers I read people declare absence of an effect while having no rational grounds for doing so.  So we need to specify what scale of effect our theory predicts. Specifying what one's theory predicts may not come naturally, but I show some ways of thinking about the problem.
