Professorship of LinguisticsFaculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics in association with Somerville CollegeThe University of Oxford intends to appoint to the Professorship of Linguistics with effect from 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. We are seeking a scholar of the highest international calibre, with an outstanding record of research in any field of Linguistics and a track record of engagement with other scholars across the discipline. The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics was established in 2008 and its tripartite title is fundamental to its identity. Teaching and research in theoretical linguistics is distinctively informed by, and in turn informs, work in philology. The theoretical and the philological strands of the Faculty’s activities are supported by, and inform, its considerable capacity for experimental research in both phonetics and psycholinguistics. The Faculty is preparing to move into new premises in the Stephen A Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities. You will play a vital leadership role in teaching and research, as well as shaping the long-term strategic direction of the Faculty.

You will play a major role in the supervision, guidance and examination of graduate students in Linguistics, and should be able to contribute broadly to undergraduate and graduate teaching and examination and be willing to take on leading roles in the faculty-wide administration. 

You should have a track record of published research of an outstanding international quality in the field of Linguistics, and the expertise and depth of knowledge of current trends in Linguistics to be able to innovate and organise research throughout this field. You will have proven ability to teach and supervise graduate students, and to provide academic leadership. You should have a record of successful grant capture and be able to demonstrate a commitment to securing funding from external grant-awarding bodies.
